Crooked Tree

Stay in an authentic Mayan village on the border of the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary. Tillett’s Lodge has five rooms in the main building, or you can rent your private rustic cabin for $50 to $60 U.S. dollars per night. Most importantly, these tiny, thatched-roof cabins have private baths with showers and comfortable double beds. Also, a two-bedroom house on stilts is available for $100 per night.

In addition to excellent birding, you can enrich yourself with local culture and delicious Mayan meals. So, no international cuisine and no crowds. You will love it.

Furthermore, the lodge can arrange boat tours of the Wildlife Sanctuary.

Crooked Tree

What a great place! Situated in a wildlife sanctuary, there is the main building where meals are served, and people can gather to meet and chat about the birds they have seen or hope to find. Nearby, small but nice cabins with private bath are available to rent. Especially relevant, the cabins are located right on the lagoon with a terrific view and biding opportunities right on your doorstep. In addition, tours can be arranged on land or the lagoon. About 300 species of birds have been seen here. So, I suggest staying for several days.

Crooked Tree cabin

This is the cabin we stayed in at Crooked Tree Lodge, located right on the lagoon’s shores. We saw Rufous-necked Woodrail right in front of the cabin and 71 other species in the few days we were there. This is the best type of birder’s accommodation in the heart of a bird sanctuary. Highly recommended.

Update: September 2024. Unfortunately, this great lodge is not currently open. Hopefully, it will reopen soon.

The Crystal Palace is a wonderful spot to spend a few days. It is located in the jungle near the town of San Ignacio. Collared Aracari, along with many other birds, are usually seen at the feeders on the deck. Contact them about transportation from San Ignacio and tours to Spanish Lookout (see guides page for more info).
