Balcon Tumpiki is a birder’s paradise. Birds are tame and come to feeders. There is a hummingbird garden with many species. See the Hotspots page for details.

Balcon Tumpiki also offers accommodations.

The accommodations are basic but nice. There is also a restaurant. It would be great to wake up in the morning and see many species of birds while having breakfast. On your way to the restaurant, you will have to pass through the hummingbird garden with about 15 species of hummingbirds. Highly recommended.

Refugio Paz de Avis is a great place to see the Andean Cock-of-the-Rcck and several species of Antpittas. See the hotspots page for details.

They also have accommodations. We recommend staying for two or three days. The accommodations are rustic, basic, and small, but very nice and adequate, with a private bath. There is also a very good restaurant.

Hacienda Jimenita has a few nice birds, including the Giant Hummingbird, Saffron Finch, Black-tailed trainbearer, White-bellied Woodstar, Golden Grosbeak and others.

It is also an excellent place to base yourself for trips to the Mindo Cloud Forest to the west and the Andes Mountains to the east. You can arrange to have your guide pick you up there. There is also a good restaurant.

It is also a nice place to stay overnight if you are going to the Galapagos. We recommend not going to Galapagos on the same day as your international flight. Your flight might be delayed, and you would miss the Galapagos flight. Going to the Galapagos requires going through luggage inspection and customs and paying a fee, even though it is all in Ecuador, so you need to allow time for that. Also, you will probably be tired after a flight from North America. It would be nice to spend a relaxing evnining at Hacienda Jimenita before going to Galapagos the next days. They will arrange to pick you up at the airport and take you back the next day. Pick-up is free, and return is $20.

It’s a nice place and recommended. It’s better and safer than staying in Quito. They will send someone to pick you up at the airport. However, it is a bit expensive. Do not do your laundry here. They charged us $45 for a load of laundry, whereas the same laundry cost $6 in town.

See the guides page for an excellent tour company that will pick you up at this hotel.

Puerto Villamil, Isla Isabella, Galapagos

Flamingos Galapagos Ecuador

In Villamil, we stayed in a small Airbnb. It was nothing special—just one room with a small table, toilet and shower. The shower has an electric water heater, which is difficult to control. Don’t touch the control if your hands are wet, as you might get a shock. What is good about this place is that it is inexpensive and is on the second floor overlooking a flamingo pond on the edge of town. There are usually six or seven American Flamingos with good photo opportunities if you have a long lens. Also lots of Wilson’s Phalarope in winter plumage. Walking distance to the town centre.

How to find this accommodation:

  • Go to Airbnb
  • In the “where” box, type “Puerto Villamil, Ecuador”.
  • choose dates and number of guests
  • Click search
  • Look for “Place to stay in Puerto Villamil
  • Click on the picture of flamingos.
