Tiritiri Matangi Island (BT)
First of all, there are no private accommodations on this government-owned wildlife sanctuary. However, you can rent a room at a Department of Conservation bunkhouse. Consequently, it is the only accommodation on the island, so don’t bother looking for anything else. Furthermore, it is shared accommodation. But very nice! You will meet other birders there. Space is limited. You need to book well in advance. It is one of the best birding hotspots in New Zealand.
Warning: A sign reads, “All Children conceived in this hut are the property of the Minister of Conservation.”
