Birding Hotspots Belize

Crooked Tree

Crooked Tree is a natural wonderland with wetland and terrestrial habitats.   It is one of the best birding locations in Belize.  Birds that I saw there include Gray-headed Kite, Black-collared Hawk, Russet-naped Woodrail (walking calmly past our cabin on the lake), Pale-vented Pigeon, Squirrel Cuckoo, Yucatan Woodpecker, Lineated Woodpecker, several different Parrots, Yucatan Jay, and the number one target – the five-foot (1.524 metres) Jabiru Stork.

The lagoon is a whopping 16,000 acres and contains 277 resident birds as well as migrants.

You should go on a wetland tour by boat and walk around the dry areas. See Accommodations and guides for more information.

Jabiru

Spanish Lookout is a Mennonite community near the town of San Ignacio.   The fields around Spanish Lookout contain some fantastic birds, the most impressive being the Jabiru Storks on a nest.  I also saw Bare-throated Tiger-Heron, Bat Falcon, Green-breasted Mango, King Vulture and many others.   See guides and accommodations.  (see guides page for tours).

Violet & Jacobin Hummingbirds

This is primarily a place to see butterflies in their various stages of metamorphosis, from egg to adult.  However, they also put out a bunch of hummingbird feeders, and you can see several species at once and get close enough to get a good photograph.   The hummingbirds are free, but you must pay a few dollars to see the butterfly enclosure, whether you want to see them or not.   I went twice, and it was definitely worth the money.   On the second visit, I paid to see the butterflies but ignored them.  I went to see and photograph the hummingbirds.

Green Hills is located near San Ignacio. As there is no designated public transport, you will need to find someone to give you a ride. Ask at your hotel. They can usually find someone who will take you there for a reasonable fee. They are on Facebook.
