Argentina is a favourite country for birding, with more than 1,000 species to search for. In addition, there are many guides to help you find them.

Francisco Cornell is a local birding guide based in Jujuy, near the borders of Bolivia and Chile, who can take you to the best birding sites in Argentina’s northwest and help you find and identify the birds of this region. Argentina’s northwest hosts very different and contrasting life zones, including the dry Chaco, the Yungas cloud forest (e.g., Calilegua National Park), the Monte, the Puna (e.g., Lake Pozuelos), and the High Andes, which are home to over 600 bird species, offering excellent birding opportunities.

The Crystal Paradise Lodge offers guided tours to Spanish Lookout and other areas around San Ignacio. However, you do not need to stay at their lodge to go on a tour. On the other hand, it’s a great place to base yourself for birding. See Aracaris on the deck. Their tours have an excellent chance of seeing Jabiru Storks. See hotspots and accommodations.

Vaughn Francis, Tropical Adventures – St George’s

Vaughn lives in the capital city, St George’s, but will pick you up anywhere you wish. The fee includes transportation and bottled water. Vaughn is highly recommended and, most importantly, knows where to find the critically endangered endemic Grenada Dove, the number one bird to see in Grenada.

Hong Kong is not just a city. Despite its reputation as a concrete jungle, there are forested areas with monkeys and lots of birds. If you’re unfamiliar with Hong Kong, see the Birding Hotspots in Hong Kong page.

Mathew Kwan was born and raised in Hong Kong and has been birding there since the age of six. So, who better to be your bird guide for Hong Kong?

You can contact Mathew on his website at matthewkwanbirding.blogspot.com

After browsing the other pages, click on “Nature Tours” to book a trip.

I highly recommend using Rio Lagartos Adventures with Diego Nunez.  First, unless you have a boat, you will need a tour company to see the lagoon.  Most noteworthy, several other operators will try to lure you with lower prices.  However, Diego is the best.   Furthermore, he can provide night Crocodile tours and arrange inland transportation for birding.   In addition, he also owns a good restaurant on the shore.  (photo courtesy of Diego Nunez).

San Blas might be the best birding location in Mexico, although it also has the most biting insects. Consequently, little, no-seem files will eat you up. The preponderance of insects is probably the reason so many birds are here. Wear a long-sleeved shirt and prepare to get a significant increase in your life list.

To see the most birds in San Blas, I recommend going with Mark Stackhouse.   Besides being an expert at identifying the local birds, he is also knowledgeable about plants and other wildlife.   Also, he is an all-around great guy and goes out of his way to assist his clients in any way he can.  He can be only your birding guide, or he can arrange all-inclusive tours that include accommodations and meals.   He can also arrange a great pelagic trip to Elephant Rock.

This is a mid-range tour company.   Cheaper tours are available from other companies, but conditions are primitive.   More luxurious tours are much more expensive.   They offer easy, moderate and extreme birding tours into Manu NP.   They have one tour, especially to see hummingbirds.   Kolibri offers many other tours, including bird photography, pelagic tours starting from Paracas, butterfly and jungle insect tours, and more. Tours range from five to 14 days.

Kolibri Expeditions seems to have a more extensive variety of tours than other companies, and they claim to have the best prices. One thing they offer that other companies do not are rental vehicles with drivers included. This costs $280 per day plus fuel and $30 for driver expenses.   The drivers are not guides, but they know the best places to look for birds.   The price includes cooking utensils, table and chairs, but not food. The driver will cook your meal while you’re birding (with the food you’ve purchased). In addition, Kolibri will provide maps and strategies to help you plan your trip.

Tarapoto is in the Amazon Jungle. For details, see Pumarinri Amazon Lodge on the Accommodations Peru page.

Angel Chujatalli is an excellent, friendly guide who knows the birds and where to find them. I went birding with him several times and was very happy with his service. He speaks intermediate English. He doesn’t have a car, but he can arrange for one with a driver. Peru is an affordable country, and the combined cost of the vehicle and guide will be about the same as the cost of the guide alone in other countries. Or you can ride on the back of his motorcycle to save money.

Angel is also an expert on Poison Dart frogs and knows where to find many species if you are interested in them.

The Ecuador Birds Tours is an excellent option for your birding adventure in Ecuador.

Base yourself at Hacienda Jimanito outside of Quito (see the accommodations page), and your guide will pick you up there.

You can arrange tours to Balcon Tumpiki and other places in the Mindo Cloud Forest to the west or the Andes Mountains to the east. There are five one-day trips on each side of Quito. From experience, we know they have friendly, knowledgeable, and English-speaking guides who work hard to find many birds for you—highly recommended.
