Most importantly, it lists the ones that are birder-friendly or located in or near a birding hotspot. Better hotels are often further away from the birding area.
Above all, the main criteria for a listing are its location in or near a birding hotspot. Secondary considerations are the birding knowledge of the owners or staff, the quality of meals, available transportation, availability of guides, etc. Better hotels might be available in a nearby city. However, you would be on your own for birding assistance and transportation to birding areas.
That does not imply that these accommodations are bad. Far from it! Accommodations that are unhealthy or dirty are not listed. While some are first-class and excellent, others might be rustic cabins.
